Upcountry History Museum

World War II was a formative era for Upcountry communities. Our region changed in many ways as a result of this war, and it is important that our youth learn why WWII was seminal to Upcountry development. This exhibit also aims to honor the veterans and home front heroes who sacrificed so much by joining the military or supporting the war effort from home.

Weaving Our Survival: Upcountry Stories of World War II and the numerous WWII-related programs that will accompany this exhibit will educate visitors about:

• How the war dramatically changed local population demographics and brought cultural and social diversity.
• The important role that the textile mills played in the home front efforts and how that industry’s changes affected the economic structure of the Upcountry.
• Local African American veterans who committed themselves to racial change throughout the South as a result of their overseas experiences.
• The many training operations throughout the Upcountry, which were based at area colleges and universities, municipal airports, Camp Croft and the Greenville Army Air Base.
• The notion of Total War and the impact that this conflict had on civilians who remained in the Upcountry.
