Documentary
In the summer of 2007, Dr. Courtney Tollison of the Upcountry History Museum and Furman University and Don Koonce of Ferncreek Creative researched, recorded, and preserved 32 oral histories with the World War II generation.
Koonce and Tollison used excerpts from select oral histories and a few dozen historic photographs, worked with a local scriptwriter, and hired a nationally known narrator out of Virginia. They combined the interviews and photographs with B-roll footage and music from the 1940s, and the result is a 24 minute video documentary on Upcountry South Carolina during this war. This work, now a national award winning documentary, presents the story of Upcountry residents’ contributions to the war effort, military and home front, while examining the way this region was impacted by the war.
The material presented in this documentary is engaging, poignant, educational, and important for all South Carolinians to see.
This documentary was awarded a national Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History in 2008.
Dr. Marian Strobel, William M. Burnett Professor and Chair, Furman University History Department said, “…innovative, inclusive, visually stimulating, and historically engrossing….The production is outstanding in that it interjects local events and people in the larger events of World War II, from the attack at Pearl harbor to the fighting in the European and Pacific theaters, to the death of Franklin Roosevelt and beyond.”
Kris Carmichael, Paradigm Museum and Non-Profit Consultants said, “The documentary artfully blends oral histories, period footage, and stills to tell the impact of war on individual lives, the local economy, are mills, college life, churches, and the community as a whole. Overall the production is very professional and intellectually engaging and a wonderful means of sharing history with the public.”
The cost for this color and black and white documentary on DVD is $8.99. Please email Kathy Barefoot at Kathy@upcountryhistory.org or call 864-467-3100.
